An Italian micro mosaic brooch

A rectangular Italian origin micro mosaic brooch with a depiction of a yacht on a lake (possibly Como) in front of an Italian villa. Fine detail with many 'tiles' in a multitude of colours. Within a black frame of onyx stone. Encased within an outer frame of yellow gold, testing as 9 carat.

Overall size 30x25mm, depth 5mm, weight 9.7grams. Remains in original condition as we have not attempted to polish to retain its authenticity.

Using very small pieces of glass or stone, referred to as tesserae, micromosaics form small pictures that might be mistaken for paintings at first glance. This technique was perfected in the Vatican Mosaic Workshop in Rome, Italy in the late 18th century. Many of these pieces were sold as souvenirs and they will depict ancient Italian landmarks. Other themes such as animals or birds can be found as well.

Quality varies in these pieces and those with those exhibiting the finest detailing and craftsmanship being, of course, the most valuable. A good number of these are set in gold frames
