An exceptional vintage cluster gem ring. The sapphire set to the centre is cushion shaped, 5.5x5.5mm (est 1 carat) The colour is a deep velvety blue which would indicate that could be a  Kashmir sapphire. 

It has been set into a yellow gold rim for maximum protection and is complimented by an outer border of eight 0.10 carat diamonds, brilliant cut, colour H-j, clarity Si. The head is silver as very usual with late 19th century rings and measures 13x13mm, depth 5.5mm. Ring weight 3.4grams. 

The band tests as 18 carat yellow gold, no hallmarks were required for this period. Size P, we can resize free of charge.

Kashmir sapphires are considered the standard for all sapphires; owning one means possessing a piece of history.

Given the limited life of the mine many of these fine gems were cut between 1882 – 1889. Old mine cuts are the most prevalent shape as these featured large open facets that enhanced the stones velvety, "sleepy" qualities and meant they performed well by the candlelight of the day.

With many stones of this age showing wear, some have been recut into modern round brilliant or cushion cuts as these shapes enhance the gem's inherent brilliance and unparalleled blue hue.



There are two key defining characteristics that distinguish Kashmir sapphires from other types of sapphires:
1) Cornflower blue hue: They exhibit a unique, intense blue hue with subtle violet undertones.
2) Silky / velvety appearance: This results from tiny inclusions within the the gem that scatter the light.
