A fine antique Frog Brooch
A charming Edwardian novelty brooch in the form of a frog, dating to around 1910. The body is set with a natural grey Mabé pearl measuring approximately 18 x 14 mm, exhibiting a beautiful soft sheen. The rest of the piece is crafted in silver, fully set with numerous rose-cut diamonds ranging from 1.5 to 2.4 mm in diameter, adding a delightful sparkle to the design. Each eye is adorned with a vivid 3 mm emerald, lending a touch of colour and life to the piece.
The reverse is finished in yellow gold, likely 15 carat, typical of the period and requiring no hallmark under Edwardian regulations. Total weight approximately 11 grams.
Dimensions: 36 x 30 mm.
Throughout history, the frog has been a symbol of fertility, transformation, and harmony—revered in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia, and celebrated in Greek and Roman mythology. In the Edwardian era, whimsical novelty brooches such as this were highly fashionable, and they remain as collectable and wearable today as they were over a century ago.
