A fine Art Deco sapphire and diamond cluster ring
Surrounded by fourteen old cut white diamonds, clarity Si, colour G-h (estimated) to a total estimated weight of 1.50 carats. Head 21x16mm depth 5.7mm, weight 5.4grams. The shank is stamped PLAT and tests as platinum. Lovely original condition, not hallmarked as usual with early 20th century and not a legal requirement.
This ring is typical of the Art Deco period when white metals such as platinum came to the fore. Allowing geometric lines which were clean and attractive stones being set into shapes that were elongated along the finger. White metals allowed diamonds that extra 'sparkle' giving an illusion of larger stones. The undersetting in this ring is a clever and skilled basket weave which has been pierced by the goldsmith to allow light to pass through the ring enhancing the stones to the benefit of the viewer. This method allows stones to glow rather than look 'dead' to the eye.
